Lancaster Fastener triumphs at this year’s Business Environment Awards

In keeping with a continued commitment to quality management processes and safe systems of work, Lancaster Fastener has been presented with the prestigious ‘Climate Change Adaptation’ Award at this year’s Lancashire Business Environment Awards.

The award category, established 14 years ago to recognise environmental excellence and sponsored by the Environment Agency, saw Lancaster Fastener fight off a strong contingent to collect the accolade.  In a ceremony on 21 October 2010 at Ewood Park, Blackburn, the ‘Climate Change Adaptation’ Award was presented to Lancaster Fastener in recognition of their recent determination to address the potential impacts of climate change - mainly the threat of flooding.

Having moved to their new custom-built premises 2 years ago and being located just 1.5 km northwest of the River Lune, Lancaster Fastener is all too well aware of the risks posed by flooding.  Sam Wilson, Managing Director commented: “Although according to the flood risk map provided by the Environment Agency, we do not lie within a designated flood risk area, this has not deterred us from taking proactive action in the event that the River Lune bursts its banks and bypasses existing natural defences.”

Although Lancaster Fastener accepts that the risk is remote, they have none the less taken necessary steps to minimise the potential damage caused by a flood in order to protect their premises, staff, stock and the interests of their customers should the unthinkable happen.  In the first instance Lancaster Fastener have appointed a Flood Warden to take overall responsibility for developing and implementing a bespoke designed flood plan.  The flood plan details the steps to be taken in the event of either pluvial or fluvial flooding and identifies the triggers that would give adequate warning of an impending flood.  The flood plan has been introduced into Lancaster Fastener’s existing Quality Management System and is audited for its effectiveness on an annual basis.
